New generations of artificial joints promise less pain and a faster return to day-to-day life. However, can we afford such innovations in the face of rising healthcare costs? A study conducted by our Hand Team answers this with a clear yes to a modern artificial joint for osteoarthritis of the trapeziometacarpal joint.

A special milestone in hand surgery was reached in January: the hand surgery team at Schulthess Klinik successfully implanted the 800th prosthesis on the carpometacarpal thumb joint.

At this year’s SGH/SGHR Congress in Lugano, the Schulthess Klinik Hand Surgery, Hand Therapy and Science team was prominently represented with numerous scientific contributions, intensive promotion of early career researchers and active networking.

He researches, develops and operates – and has played a decisive role in shaping hand surgery in Europe for years. Dr. med. Daniel Herren, Head of Hand Surgery at Schulthess Klinik, has now been awarded the title of “Giant of Hand Surgery” – only the second Swiss hand surgeon ever to receive this accolade.

Scientific achievements and groundbreaking projects: The Schulthess Klinik team was strongly represented at the annual congress of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) – and won several awards. 

Tutti per uno, uno per tutti: the Schulthess Klinik team shines at SGH/SGHR Swiss Hand Congress in Lugano. 

The Schulthess Klinik’s Hand Surgery and Research team were on fine form at this year’s FESSH (Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand) Congress, where they made 27 appearances. The team’s efforts were rewarded with the Top-Cited Papers Award and silver Medartis Best Paper Award.

Schulthess Klinik is celebrating a milestone after our hand surgeons used the 500th CapFlex prosthesis. This treatment for osteoarthritis of the interphalangeal joint improves our patients’ quality of life.

In March, the Hand Surgery department successfully implanted its 500th Touch prosthesis in a patient with carpometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb joint. Schulthess Klinik has been using this state-of-the-art joint prosthesis, which has revolutionised thumb arthroplasty, since 2018.

In March, Head of Department Dr. Daniel Herren from the Hand Surgery department at the Schulthess Klinik welcomed two specialist international colleagues as guests: Prof. Simon Farnebo from Sweden and Dr. Alex Lluch from Spain. They exchanged information about the latest surgical techniques and provided insights into research.
