News 800th thumb carpometacarpal joint prosthesis successfully implanted
How research and medicine interact in hand surgery.
A special milestone in hand surgery was reached in January: the hand surgery team at Schulthess Klinik successfully implanted the 800th prosthesis on the carpometacarpal thumb joint. This achievement means that the clinic, which is led by Dr. med. Daniel Herren, is one of the leading centres in this field, both nationally and internationally.
The procedure involves implanting a state-of-the-art carpometacarpal thumb joint prosthesis of the latest generation, which has been used at Schulthess Klinik since 2018. The high quality standards are reflected in both the operating theatre and the close interaction between medical practice and our research.

In order to systematically review and continuously improve treatment results, the data of all patients is recorded in a clinical registry. Among other things, the development of pain, improvement in hand function and satisfaction after the procedure are documented.
This scientifically collected data is regularly evaluated by the Schulthess Klinik research team and incorporated directly into clinical work. In this way, research findings are applied directly to indications for surgery, surgical techniques and individually tailored follow-up treatment.
Through this close interplay between research and medicine, Schulthess Klinik ensures that patients with osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint are treated in accordance with the latest scientific findings and benefit from many years of surgical experience.
