In March, Head of Department Dr. Daniel Herren from the Hand Surgery department at the Schulthess Klinik welcomed two specialist international colleagues as guests: Prof. Simon Farnebo from Sweden and Dr. Alex Lluch from Spain. Schulthess Klinik is celebrating a milestone after our hand surgeons used the 500th CapFlex prosthesis. This treatment for osteoarthritis of the interphalangeal joint improves our patients’ quality of life.
A newly developed cartilage repair procedure has shown promising results in terms of repairing damage to knee cartilage. Cartilage chip implantation involves mechanically crushing the patient’s own cartilage tissue into “chips”. These are mixed with the patient’s own blood, which has been prepared beforehand, and then reused.

Professor Norbert Gschwend died in the evening of Sunday, 22 March 2020 at the age of 95. With his pioneering spirit, Norbert Gschwend not only had a formative influence on orthopaedic surgery, but also on the history of Schulthess Klinik. In him, we have lost a great physician, a sponsor, our patron, and a friend.
As part of our comprehensive commitment, we support CYBATHLON 2020 as a medical partner in particular. Our Medical Team is examining 57 pilots from 21 countries, domiciled in time zones around the world, most of them in collaboration with a specialist on the ground via a remote examination. The medical checks ensure the safety of the pilots and guarantee fair starting conditions.

A successful information event with some important news: Schulthess Klinik’s Golf Medical Center (GMC) shared some fascinating insights into golf medicine and prevention with over 280 attendees at an information event at the end of 2024, where guests also found out about the powerful team that will lead the GMC into the future.

On 19 January, the world’s first implant of a KeriFlex finger prosthesis was performed at Schulthess Klinik. Dr. med. Daniel Herren MHA, our Head of Hand Surgery, assisted with the development of this prosthesis for patients experiencing painful deterioration of their proximal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints as the result of accident or illness.
Schulthess Klinik reaffirms its leading position in the healthcare sector. According to the latest hospital ranking by the renowned US magazine Newsweek and the research institute Statista, Schulthess Klinik remains the best orthopaedic clinic in Switzerland and still holds second place in Europe.
A special milestone in hand surgery was reached in January: the hand surgery team at Schulthess Klinik successfully implanted the 800th prosthesis on the carpometacarpal thumb joint.
The data from the Swiss National Joint Registry SIRIS is clear: Schulthess Klinik’s high degree of specialisation and extensive experience has a direct beneficial impact on patient outcomes. Within two years after a hip or knee replacement operation, significantly fewer Schulthess Klinik patients require revision surgery than is the average in clinics across Switzerland. With hip replacements, Schulthess Klinik’s rate is 1%, whilst for knee replacements the figure is 1.1%. This is over two and a half and three times lower than the Swiss average respectively.
Last week, Prof. Dr. med. Friederike Schömig paid us a two-day visit. She has been a professor at Charité Berlin since September 2025 and holds the professorship sponsored by the Schulthess Foundation.
Prof. Dr. med. Markus Scheibel, Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Schulthess Klinik, had the proud honour of being invited to the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the USA as a visiting professor at the end of August.
On 8 September 2020, the University of Debrecen in Hungary awarded Dezsö Jeszenszky the title of professor at a formal ceremony. We would like to congratulate Prof. Dezsö Jeszenszky on this milestone and we are delighted to have a spine surgeon on board who has worked tirelessly on behalf of patients for many years.
At this year’s annual conference of the Swiss Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SGOT), Dr Michael C. Glanzmann and Cécile Grobet, representing the entire authorship (Prof. Dr. Klaus Eichler, Flurina Meier, Dominik Rickenbacher, Dr Beatrice Brunner and Prof. Dr. Laurent Audigé), won the Maurice E. Müller Prize for the best clinical paper.
Spine Surgery at Schulthess Klinik is one of four certified «AO Spine Centers» in Switzerland alongside the University Hospitals of Basel and Bern and the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital. It is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dezsö J. Jeszenszky, PhD. This certification is granted to only very few highly specialised centres in the field of spinal surgery.
