In early March, two scoliosis operations were performed at the Schulthess Klinik based on a new procedure – one that had never been used before in Switzerland – that is designed to preserve mobility. Unlike operations involving fusion, this approach makes it possible to maintain more flexibility in the spine.

Treatment of the common condition lumbar stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar region) needs to be handled better. With this aim in mind, Schulthess Klinik, Balgrist University Hospital and University Hospital Zurich have been conducting joint research for nine years now. The results from over 850 patients have appeared in over 20 studies up to the present day, with the aim of providing patients affected with optimal, knowledge-based and individual treatment.

Our celebrations to mark the formal acceptance of the postdoctoral thesis of PD Dr. med. Dezsö J. Jeszenszky, our long-serving Head of Spine Surgery, Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, highlighted his tireless commitment to keep on improving patient treatment. His postdoctoral thesis entitled «New surgical procedures in the treatment of paediatric spinal column diseases» outlines just what he has achieved over the years in the treatment of children with scoliosis and other diseases of the spinal column

At the Spine Society of Europe’s annual EUROSPINE congress in Helsinki, PD Dr. med. Markus Loibl and the Spine Team at Schulthess Klinik were presented with the 2019 Best Podium Presentation Award. Their study on the topic of fusion operations in cases where the spine is showing signs of wear came out on top out of over 1,000 submissions.

In April 2019, the Schulthess Klinik’s Spine Surgery, Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery Department was honoured to be named the third “AOSpine Centre” in Switzerland, alongside the University Hospitals of Basel and Bern. Dr. med. Dezsö J. Jeszenszky will be taking over the management of the AOSpine Centre.
