Schulthess Klinik Annual Report: All-round expertise for healthy movement and exercise

In 2019, Schulthess Klinik took care of 7,798 inpatients, performed 9,364 surgical procedures and conducted 121,253 outpatient consultations. Each of these figures was made possible by a broad range of expertise and services – and above all, the people who provide them. The Schulthess Klinik Annual Report offers a detailed overview of the clinic’s various specialist departments and their accomplishments in 2019.

20 years of shoulder registry: from a pioneering project to a valuable source of knowledge

Twenty years ago, Dr. med. Hans-Kaspar Schwyzer began systematically documenting shoulder prosthesis surgeries at the Schulthess Klinik. Thousands of cases later, this amount of data now provides unique insights for research and treatment. Together with his successor, Prof. Dr. med. Markus Scheibel, who now continues the project with his team, Hans-Kaspar Schwyzer reflects in this interview on the early days, the development, and the years of collaboration.

Spine Surgery

The specialist team is made up of doctors specialising in orthopaedics and neurosurgery. All the surgical physicians specialise in spinal surgery and are certified by the Swiss Society for Orthopaedics (SGO) or the Swiss Society for Neurosurgery (SGNC).

The implementation of each clinical trial entails several phases.

Knee prosthesis – the artificial knee joint

An artificial knee joint is used to replace the natural sliding and surface areas of the knee joint when these have become worn. The components for replacing these surfaces, the femoral cap and the tibial plate, are made from highly polished metal (cobalt-chromium alloy). Between the metal surfaces there is a cartilage replacement made from polyethylene (a highly advanced plastic). Once the components of the artificial knee joint have been implanted in the body, they are held together in a stable position and guided during movement by the knee’s own ligaments, the joint capsule and the strength of the muscles.

Ranked fourth-best orthopaedic clinic in the world

Schulthess Klinik reaffirms its status as a global leader in healthcare. The clinic has been named the fourth-best orthopaedic clinic in the world and the second-best orthopaedic clinic in Europe in the latest hospital ranking published by renowned American magazine Newsweek and research institute Statista.

Persona Revision System implanted in Switzerland for the first time

Schulthess Klinik is the first clinic in Switzerland to successfully deploy the Persona Revision System, marking a step forward in the field of knee surgery.

Successful shoulder operation for Olympic champion

The Shoulder and Elbow Surgery department at Schulthess Klinik has successfully operated on freestyle wrestler and Olympic champion Akhmed Tazhudinov. Before his surgery, the athlete, who competes for Bahrain, won the gold medal in freestyle wrestling in the 97 kg weight class at the Olympic Games in Paris despite a serious shoulder injury.

A huge thumbs up: Hand Surgery department celebrates 500th Touch thumb carpometacarpal thumb joint prosthesis implantation

In March, the Hand Surgery department successfully implanted its 500th Touch prosthesis in a patient with carpometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb joint. Schulthess Klinik has been using this state-of-the-art joint prosthesis, which has revolutionised thumb arthroplasty, since 2018.
