Is it possible to predict the result of an operation for lumbar disc herniation?
Our spine research team has developed a prognosis tool to predict the result of surgery for spinal disc herniation. This means that patients are given a realistic assessment of what they can expect from an operation.

Hand Surgery Congress with a difference: FESSH-ON(line)-Week 2020
In light of the current situation, this year’s Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand Congress was held online this autumn: with over 1,100 participants coming together from 61 countries. The highlight were the live operations, which were broadcastlive online.
Data protection
Schulthess Klinik respects the need to protect its clients' personal data and therefore complies with data protection rules, particularly the provisions of the Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (FDPA) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Personal data is only processed if i) the data subject has given their approval, ii) this is necessary for the fulfilment of a contract, or iii) the FDPA, the GDPR, or some other law permits or stipulates processing.
2nd joint shoulder conference from HSS, Charité Berlin and Schulthess Klinik
The second ever HSS-Charité-Schulthess Shoulder Conference is taking place on 27 January. The conference will see specialists from the HSS Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Schulthess Klinik join forces to share their knowledge with shoulder surgeons from all over the world in online training sessions.

The ‘HSS-Charité-Schulthess Spine Case Conference’ was held for the ninth time on 21 July. The conference is an occasion for specialists from the HSS Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Schulthess Klinik Zurich to join forces and share their knowledge with specialists from all over the world in online training sessions.
Complications following surgery for spinal curvatures: searching for the cause
Long-segment fusion operations may be the best solution for treating spinal curvature in adults, but why do some patients experience mechanical complications after this kind of surgery? Our research team is on the case: working with ETH Zurich as part of the European Spine Study Group, it is looking into the causes of this with the aim of further improving and tailoring the treatment options available to these patients.
Concussion and sport
Sport can be a source of concussions. especially contact sports where the head and body are subjected to sudden forces of acceleration for which they are unprepared. This kind of injury can affect various systems (brain, cervical spine, equilibrium organ in the inner ear) simultaneously. Through our interdisciplinary collaboration, our extensive medical support network through the Swiss Olympic Medical Center and daily work in the field of elite sport, we also treat patients with complex concussions and offer advice to external institutions.

The pastoral care team at Schulthess Klinik offers attentive, understanding talks for patients, their families and hospital employees, regardless of their religious affiliation or belief. We, the pastors, take our time, listen and offer support.
How an outcome system can contribute to greater patient satisfaction
Including data from a patient’s perspective has been shown to contribute to better treatment outcomes and greater patient satisfaction. Schulthess Klinik has been collecting data of this kind for many years now. The aim of our research project is to use an expert outcome system to capture this patient perspective and all other treatment-relevant data in a central system and make it available to doctors at the touch of a button. This allows them to better understand patients' specific health needs and tailor treatment to their individual needs.
Quality of everyday life thanks to research on the knee joint
Our research team is taking a closer look at the bone. Specifically, we want to know what influence bone structure and bone quality have on the longevity of a knee prosthesis. We are looking for answers to the following questions: For which patients is a knee prosthesis the right treatment option? Which prosthesis is best for whom? And how long can the patient expect their knee prosthesis to last? Find out more about our current research project.
