Featured Two new reference works from Schulthess Klinik: sharing knowledge for better treatments
Two specialist books from Schulthess Klinik were published in May: Prof. Dr. med. Markus Scheibel, Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Dr. biol. hum. Fabio Galbusera, Head of the Spine Research Group, have each published a new reference work.
The books focus on shoulder arthroplasty and the biomechanics of the spine respectively. They bring together the latest knowledge from clinical practice and research, thereby making an important contribution to the further development of patient care and to the international dissemination of knowledge.
Guidance in the dynamic field of shoulder surgery
Shoulder surgery, and with it the field of joint replacement, is developing rapidly. Numerous new scientific publications and studies appear every year. This makes works that organise current knowledge and summarise it in a practical manner all the more important.
This is precisely what the new specialist book “Endoprosthetics of the Shoulder” achieves, edited by Prof. Dr. med. Markus Scheibel together with Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Niemeier, Reinbek St. Adolf-Stift Hospital, and Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Brunner, Orthoclinic Agatharied.
The book is regarded as a reference work for shoulder arthroplasty in German-speaking countries and brings together leading expertise from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The book is aimed at doctors in further training as well as qualified orthopaedic surgeons and traumatologists who wish to specialise in shoulder surgery. It presents established standards, current developments and concrete recommendations for daily practice. Ultimately, this benefits patients: the better the medical knowledge available, the more informed treatment decisions can be made.

Understanding the spine better
In his new specialist book “Biomechanics of the Human Spine”, Dr Fabio Galbusera addresses key questions in spinal medicine: How does the human spine function, how does it move, and what stresses is it subjected to in everyday life?
Together with Prof. Hans-Joachim Wilke of the University of Ulm, he has published a work that combines biomechanical fundamentals with clinical issues. The book also demonstrates how modern research methods – from X-rays and motion analysis to computer models and artificial intelligence – contribute to a better understanding of the spine.
This knowledge lays the foundation for more precise diagnoses, more personalised treatments and the further development of surgical methods, implants and therapeutic approaches. The book brings together contributions from international experts and is regarded as an important reference work in modern spinal research. It is aimed at specialists in research and medical technology who deal with the biomechanics of the spine.

From knowledge to better treatment
These two publications exemplify what sets the Schulthess Clinic apart: clinical experience, research and knowledge transfer form a cycle.
New insights emerge from the treatment of patients and from scientific research. We pass on these insights through specialist literature, conferences and international collaboration, and they in turn feed back into medical practice. In this way, knowledge helps to continuously improve treatments – for the benefit of patients.
