Our hand surgery and science team was well-represented at this year’s IFSSH, IFSHT & FESSH Combined Congress from June 6 to 10 in London. Michael Oyewale was awarded a research prize at the Congress.

The Hand Surgery update Schulthess Klinik – Arthroplasty of the Fingers, Thumb and the Distal Radio-Ulnar Joint (DRUJ) has been cancelled.

Healing, researching, helping in the spirit of cutting-edge medicine, innovation and humanity has been the Schulthess Klinik motto since 1883. In 2021, our 1,131 employees continued to do great things to relieve people of their pain and restore their mobility. The clinic has exceeded the previous year’s figures.

For conditions and injuries involving the first two cervical vertebrae, one possible option is to fuse them both. Our study shows that this intervention is safe and delivers good results, despite the complexity involved.

Spine Surgery at Schulthess Klinik is one of four certified «AO Spine Centers» in Switzerland alongside the University Hospitals of Basel and Bern and the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital. It is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dezsö J. Jeszenszky, PhD. This certification is granted to only very few highly specialised centres in the field of spinal surgery. The research department of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery has once again published groundbreaking results, this time for a known and hitherto unsolved problem after rotator cuff surgeries: frozen shoulder. Thanks to a study based on our comprehensive rotator cuff registry there are now better prognosis and prevention options.

The Hemmi-Stiftung foundation has awarded the Research Award 2021 to D Zina-Mary Manjaly, Schulthess Klinik’s Senior Consultant in Neurology. Dr Manjaly’s award-winning work is designed to lay the foundations for future procedures for diagnosing multiple sclerosis. Congratulations, Dr Manjaly!

The American news magazine Newsweek has once again ranked Schulthess Klinik as the world’s sixth-best hospital for orthopaedics in its recently published list of the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2022”.

Dr. med. Stephan Schindele, our Co-Head of Hand Surgery, has published a new textbook entitled «Arthroplasty in Hand Surgery», which he co-authored with the renowned hand surgeons Dr. Grey Giddins from the UK and Dr. Philippe Bellemère from France. The book provides comprehensive descriptions of surgical procedures on the hand and finger joints using prostheses.

The ETH Zurich study led by first author Dr. Barbara Postolka has won the ISB Clinical Biomechanics Award. Schulthess Klinik was also involved in the award-winning study through our research associate, Dr. sc. ETH Renate List as well as our Human Performance Lab. Congratulations to everyone involved!
