Foot Surgery
Annual report 2025
Precise and fast diagnostics, sparing interventions
The Foot Surgery department at Schulthess Klinik combines specialised expertise with state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedures. In doing so, we prioritise surgical techniques that make diagnostics and treatment more efficient, more precise and less invasive.
On-site ultrasound during the doctor’s appointment
The increased use of ultrasound in consultations enables fast, uncomplicated and radiation-free diagnostics. This allows for many questions to be answered directly on site, without additional appointments or X-rays that expose patients to radiation.
We now perform even minor procedures, such as infiltrations or punctures, under ultrasound guidance. Whereas X-ray devices were often used for guidance in the past, ultrasound now allows precise targeting without exposure to radiation. This reduces time and cost, simultaneously increasing treatment precision.
Minimal intervention, maximum protection
Percutaneous surgery has been used since 2025. In layperson’s language, “percutaneous” means “through the skin”. Interventions are performed through tiny skin punctures instead of bigger incisions. This approach protects the tissue, promotes faster wound healing and results in particularly pleasing cosmetic outcomes. The use of this method will be gradually expanded and carefully applied in appropriate cases.
Change of Departmental Head
In 2025, Dr. med. Pascal Rippstein announced that he would hand over his role as Head of Foot Surgery to Dr. med. Philipp Friederichsen at the start of 2026. Over more than three decades, Pascal Rippstein built up Foot Surgery at Schulthess Klinik, establishing a specialised department that now employs 25 people and has operated on over 11,000 feet. He will continue to be associated with the hospital as Senior Consultant.
